Hooters Closes in Fresh Meadows as Cunningham Park Hosts a Queens Jazz Trail Concert

The storefront at 61-09 190th Street has been dark since late February. Hoodline reported that New York City's only remaining Hooters, a fixture of movie-night meetups and wing runs in the plaza for years, shut its doors quietly and posted a short farewell on Instagram calling itself "a Queens legend." More than five months later, the space is still empty. A new tenant has reportedly signed a lease. Nothing has opened.

One week from now, on a Thursday evening, a Brooklyn brass band is scheduled to perform at Cunningham Park, half a mile away, as part of the Queens Jazz Trail series.

The Storefront That's Waiting On 190th Street

Hooters' exit from Fresh Meadows wasn't an isolated local story. The chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2025 as part of a shift toward a franchise-only model, and since then, it has closed roughly 30 company-owned locations nationwide. A Farmingdale location on Long Island closed in mid-February, and the Fresh Meadows storefront followed within weeks. Regulars described the closing as sudden, and it left a gap in the plaza's late-night dining options that hasn't been filled.

There is a plan for the space. Commercial Observer reported back in October 2025 that Burger Village had signed a lease at the address, which suggests a casual chain is already lined up to move in. What isn't clear is when. Leasehold terms and build-out timelines are their own process, and as of this writing, no opening date has surfaced anywhere. For a plaza that anchored a lot of neighborhood routine for a long stretch, that's a long stretch of empty storefront.

A Thursday Night Concert At Cunningham Park

On August 20, Cunningham Park hosts the second-to-last stop on the 2026 Queens Jazz Trail Concert Series, a free outdoor concert series presented by Kupferberg Center for the Arts, Flushing Town Hall, and the Louis Armstrong House Museum in partnership with NYC Parks. The act is Brass Queens, a female-led, Brooklyn-based brass band that blends New Orleans brass tradition with jazz, pop, reggaeton, mambo, and classic rock. Since forming in 2019, the group has played Carnegie Hall and the Met Gala and toured festivals here and abroad.

Kupferberg Center for the Arts director Jon Yanofsky described the series' purpose in a statement to QNS, saying these performances "bring communities together in parks across the borough" while honoring the jazz history that runs through Queens neighborhoods. The series runs eight consecutive Thursdays, from July 9 through August 27, moving through Travers Park, Baisley Pond Park, Forest Park Bandshell, Bowne Park, Rockaway Beach Park, and Archie Spigner Park before landing in Cunningham Park and then closing out in Astoria. Fresh Meadows gets one date on that circuit, and it's this one.

Cunningham Park's Everyday Uses

Cunningham Park offers everyday recreation as well as scheduled events. The dog run at 193rd Street and Radnor Road has separate fenced areas for small and large dogs, and it draws a daily crowd of owners who treat it as a standing appointment rather than an occasional outing. The park's multi-use trails wind past tennis courts, a bocce court, playgrounds, and the Down to Earth farmers market, which sets up on park grounds for produce and local goods.

The storefront on 190th Street remains vacant.

Restaurants Near Cunningham Park

Walk the streets around Cunningham Park and the restaurant scene is not organized around any single retail center. It's a scatter of independent, small operators: Kin'd, Union Bistro Steakhouse and Sushi, Turquoise Fish, POSH Café & Restaurant, Cooked Klean, Romeo's Pizzeria, Hibachi Fresh, and Manny's Deli & Grill all sit within reach of the park, covering everything from steakhouse sushi to a straightforward pizza slice.

If Fresh Meadows is where you already live, the practical version of all this is simple. Put August 20 on the calendar, bring a blanket or a lawn chair, and get to Cunningham Park before 7 PM if you want a good spot near the stage. The concert is free and open to anyone who shows up. While you're there, take the dog by the run at 193rd and Radnor, or plan a stop at the farmers market on your way in or out.

As for 190th Street, keep half an eye on it. A Burger Village opening would end one of the longer vacancy stretches this stretch of the neighborhood has seen in a while, and when a storefront finally reopens after sitting dark that long, it tends to become news on its own.
